Whole-Body Cryotherapy

Why would I use it?
Whole-body cryotherapy
Whole-body cryotherapy
Whole-body cryotherapy has the effect of quite literally grabbing inflammation by the horns and pulling it down.

In addition, through regular use, whole-body cryotherapy has recently been found to turn indolent white fat cells in to calorie-burning brown cells in a process called browning or beiging. This offers a very promising way to boost metabolism and reduce fat.

These effects are felt throughout the body, not just peripherally, so the benefits are profound.

Conditions include:

  • Living with obesity
  • Arthritis (both osteo and rheumatoid) and tendonitis.
  • Non-specific lower back pain.
  • Chronic Pain Syndrome (CPS) and fibromyalgia.
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
  • Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease.
  • Cancer treatment side effects.
  • Long COVID, ME, glandular fever and CFS.

For healthy longevity, reverse ageing programmes and personal wellness:

  • Delaying and helping prevent the onset of age-related conditions.
  • Reversing age-related cognitive, memory and attention decline.
  • Increasing athletic performance and decreasing recovery time.

Whole-body cryotherapy is a treatment whereby a person's whole body is briefly exposed to extremely cold air for up to three minutes. This extreme cold triggers natural anti-inflammatory and physiological responses that reduce inflammation and pain, encourages fat reduction, improve muscle recovery, and enhance overall wellness.

Please note: Our 2-person cryotherapy chamber is truly whole-body, unlike nitrogen chambers that only cool you from the chest down. This gives a very different sensation, with more widespread, far-reaching benefits.

What happens during a whole-body cryotherapy session?
Ready, steady...!
Ready, steady...!
If it is your first time taking whole-body cryotherapy with us, please allow 15 minutes before the anticipated start of your session so that we have time to conduct a full clinical assessment. During this assessment we will take readings of your blood pressure, oxygen saturation level and temperature to ensure that you are well enough to partake in whole-body cryotherapy.

After your assessment, you will be shown to the changing rooms. After you have changed into your swimwear or down to your underwear and donned your robe or towel, you will be handed a pairs of gloves, socks and Crocs as well as a headband or beanie hat and face mask which you will be shown how to wear for maximum protection. We will then ask you the all-important question:

"Which tune would you like played during your session?"

All done!
All done!
When you are ready, you will hang your robe or towel on the coat hooks outside the chamber, and our member of staff will take your skin temperature. This is done using a thermal camera aimed at your upper arm. Our member of staff will commence a short countdown after which they will open the door for the shortest time possible and ask you to step in.

It will feel cold! But it's not uncomfortable like an ice water plunge. You can move around the chamber or keep still; it's up to you. At any time, you can indicate to our member of staff that you wish to end the session or you can simply exit the chamber yourself by pushing the door open and stepping out. The chamber will automatically inform you when three minutes is up, at which point our member of staff will open the door and ask you to step out.

We will then measure your skin temperature again to determine the difference from the start and thus the effectiveness of the treatment. We then recommend that you remove your gloves, socks, hat etc. and retreat to the sauna for at least twenty minutes.

You will almost certainly feel an energizing, tingling sensation, for an hour or so after your session. This is quite normal and demonstrates that the treatment is working.

After your session we will recommend that you spend at least 30-minutes in the guests' lounge partaking in light refreshments and relaxing before you leave.

Do I need to do anything before the session?

The only thing that you need to do is to make sure you bring your swimwear/bikini/shorts/crop top or are wearing sensible underwear! Please don't forget to wear a good pair of socks.

Although we have robes and towels for you here, you are of course welcome to bring your own.

If you are going to become a regular, we recommend the purchase of your own beanie hat/headband, gloves, socks and Crocks for the sole purpose of whole-body cryotherapy sessions.

What are the risks?
Whole body cryotherapy is very safe; it's not like jumping into an ice bath. But there are a few risks, the main one being frostbite if you stay in too long. A more comprehensive set of known risks will be provided during your initial clinical assessment.

Is it right for me?
The conditions for which whole body cryotherapy would not be recommended are:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) or heart conditions or those with a pacemaker.
  • Recent heart attack or thrombosis - within 12-months.
  • Unstable/uncontrolled angina.
  • Cardiovascular issues, Raynaud's syndrome, cold allergies or vasculitis.
